Formula 1: Performance and Design, the role of Aerodynamics

Newly appointed visiting academic Dr Neil Ashton arranged for the Oxford e-Research Centre and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to host a special talk from F1 aerodynamicist Willem Toet yesterday evening at the University of Oxford Mathematical institute. His talk was entitled: “Formula 1: Performance and Design, the role of Aerodynamics”.

To an audience of more than 250 people, he used his 30 years of experience in Formula 1 to explain how to design a Formula 1 car, and the role aerodynamics.  Having led the aerodynamics department at teams such as Benetton and Ferrari when Michael Schumacher won so many titles, his openness was something very rare in the often secret work of Formula 1.
